Goal Setting Strategies That Drive Career Achievement

by | Dec 22, 2021 | Career Growth and Development

My goal for this article is to demonstrate how easy it can be for you to set goals so that you can achieve all those things you want to accomplish in life. It is important to know that goal setting is an action that many people tend to put off, even though it is an extremely important principle in achieving real success. The type of success to which I am referring consists of you being in charge of your own life and doing all the things that you want to do when you want to do them. This type of success allows you to have peace. Am I saying that all of life’s problems will go away if you set goals? No, but setting goals will allow you to handle them with more ease and efficiency.

Start Writing Down Your Goals

So, start thinking about setting goals and about writing them down. Many people skip this step because they either don’t know what they want or they don’t know how to set up a plan to achieve it. Writing down goals is not the same as making a New Year’s resolution. Saying you are going to lose weight without a concrete plan is a recipe for failure. To succeed, you need a clear roadmap. List the exercises you will do, how many repetitions, and track your progress. This same principle applies to every area of life. You can see what is working and adjust when it’s not.

The Power of Planning

There’s a story, often attributed to Yale University in the 1950s, about students who were asked to write down their career goals. Only 3% actually did. Twenty years later, the financial wealth of that 3% supposedly surpassed the combined wealth of the other 97%. True or not, the lesson is clear: successful people plan and track their progress. I’ve also seen this in real life. People who achieve big goals do so because they have a roadmap, and they follow it.

Emmitt Smith, the running back for the Dallas Cowboys, is another great example. During his rookie season, he wrote out his goals, including becoming the all-time leading rusher in the NFL. Today, he holds that record. Some teammates thought his goals were too ambitious, but writing them down gave him focus and accountability. There is power and promise in putting pen to paper.

No Plan B

Successful people know where they are going, and they don’t have a plan “B”. Thomas Edison never had a plan “B”. He failed many times but considered those failures discoveries on the way to success. Spending time thinking about alternatives dilutes focus. Focus fully on your goal. Your undivided attention is your greatest asset.

Identify Needs, Wants, and Desires

When you think about your goals, categorize them:

  • Needs: Today’s essentials, like rent, mortgage, utilities, insurance, and car payments.
  • Wants: Tomorrow’s priorities, such as building a retirement fund, saving for a home, or taking annual family vacations.
  • Desires: Future luxuries you hope to enjoy once financial responsibilities are met.

Steps to Set and Achieve Your Goals

  • Brainstorm and write down all that you want. If you’re married, align with your spouse to ensure both of you share the vision. Include short-term, mid-range, and long-term goals.
  • Create a plan to achieve each goal. For example, in sales, track calls and metrics needed to hit revenue targets. In customer service, plan steps to get recognized and promoted.
  • Set a completion date for each goal.
  • Identify potential obstacles and plan solutions. If your current job or resources limit your progress, set a goal to address that.
  • Follow your plan strictly. No plan “B”. Plan “A” is your focus.
  • Review your goals daily to stay on track.
  • Evaluate progress weekly and adjust as needed.
  • Surround yourself with people who encourage your growth. Avoid negativity or naysayers who doubt your abilities.
  • Be mindful of your mindset. Stop complaining, focus on solutions, and stay positive.
  • Consume content that motivates. Replace passive TV or talk radio with podcasts, audiobooks, or videos that teach and inspire.
  • Believe in yourself.
  • Pick a start date, begin, and never stop.

Goal setting is not complicated. It is about clarity, focus, and action. Writing goals down, tracking progress, and committing fully to your plan will transform your ability to achieve what you want in life. Good luck. You can do it.
